How Instagram is Taking a Stand Against Bullying

Every effort - individually or organizationally - to help combat negativity, bullying, and gossip....matters.

According to Forbes, Instagram is one of the most popular social media platforms with more than 500 million active users. Their engagement performance was judged by the ability to connect with their followers via post visibility, comments, and share-ability. Many Instagram users utilize the application the way it’s intended; for positive social interaction. However, there’s no denying it’s also used for spreading gossip and bullying.

Recognizing this as a serious problem, Instagram has taken proactive steps to stop cyberbullying. Not only are they allowing users to filter and block certain comments, but they're allowing users to report any unusual or inappropriate behavior.

GREATER CONTROLS

Celebrities are always in the headlines, which makes them easy targets for cyberbullying. However, the average user can be just as easily targeted. Because of this, Instagram has given users more power to control the comments they receive, including the ability to block any and all hurtful comments.

Receiving positive comments on a photo can feel uplifting and validating, and even make someone’s day. But, a day or good mood can also be ruined by receiving offensive and abusive comments. Comments can sometimes be rude and cruel while targeting specific users, and entire false accounts can be set up simply for the purpose of disparaging others.

KEYWORD FILTERS TO PREVENT OFFENSIVE LANGUAGE

Another innovative feature Instagram rolled out allows users to apply certain keyword filters to block offensive language. By using filters, the application identifies hate speech, profanity, and abusive adjectives. Anything you find personally offensive or unwanted can be blocked from the comments. Instagram has allowed users to even block insulting emojis, as well.

For a list of offensive words and their alternate spellings (using $ for s and 0 for o), search “List of Words to Block” on your Internet browser. Taking steps to implement keyword filters on your account means you can stop the cyberbullying before it ever starts.

SPREADING KINDNESS INSTEAD OF HATE

Not only is Instagram trying to stop cyberbullying and harmful gossip from spreading via cyberspace, they are providing alternatives to the destructive behaviors. Sometimes the most effective anti-bullying programs are the ones that promote and provide options for more positive interaction with others. With Instagram’s goal of encouraging kindness as much as they are discouraging hate, they are taking a huge step forward and playing a vital role in positive change.

The effects of cyberbullying and gossip in cyberspace are very real, and what Instagram is doing to help combat the problem is commendable.

Together, we can make a difference - one kind word, one less judgment at a time...
